As I was driving back up the main street towards home the other day, I saw what used to be the local comic book shop. It looked like an empty commercial space.
I was equally heartened by my local game shop with loud signs on its windows, saying "Everything Must Go!" My beloved suspects that a developer bought up all the lots around it and was just waiting to snatch up the final piece.
I also hear that a well-known local game shop across the bridge (not too far from where I work) may be closing. I have many friends who shopped there, one apparently with a lifetime discount for being such a good customer.
I recently discovered that a Wal-Mart will be opening soon in town. Because apparently two such abominations within 15 or 20-minute drives is not enough. It's at the wrong end of a particular street, too; there was much more land at the other end. But that's already developed, and probably has a competitor or two. Apparently you can't rule the retail world if you have a store in line of sight of one of your competitors. (Wal-Mart rant saved for a separate post.)
At least I know where my next-closest comic and hobby/game shops are. But I'm still grumpy.
